CFA in KATHA 2014 Launch

60 Kindergarten teachers, 58 Math teachers and 20 Home-based educators gathered for the KATHA 2014 launch held on July 12, 2014 at Valenzuela National High School. The 10-day staggered schedule training-workshop was initiated by the Communication Foundation for Asia (CFA), Office of Cong. Magtanggol “Magi” Gunigundo and the Educational Resources on Multilingualism and Multiculturalism for All Teachers (ERMMAT) in cooperation with the Valenzuela Department of Education, University of the Philippines Family Life and Child Development group (UP FLCD) and UP Layap.

The plenary session started with the opening remarks from Dr. Willie Cabral, DepEd Superintendent Division of City Schools Valenzuela, followed by a keynote address given by Cong. Gunigundo. He talked about MTB-MLE provisions of the new K-12 Law (RA 10533).

Fr. Benjamin Alforque, MSC of CFA gave a talk on Integrating Values and Culture in Education, while Dr. Ricardo Ma. Nolasco, associate professor of the UP Diliman Department of Linguistics discussed What MTB-MLE is and What it is Not.

Parallel sessions began on the afternoon. The resource speakers were Ms. Micah del Mundo, Ms. Charla Santiago and Mr. Lester Lim of UP FLCD, and the math duo Ms. Pauline Mangulabnan of DLSU, Manila and Mr. Robert Contreras.

KATHA aims to continue and sustain the efforts of stakeholders in orienting, educating and preparing the teachers, school heads, parents and communities to support the new language-in-education policy of the government. The resource pool for Katha 2014 includes experts from CFA, UP Diliman, De La Salle University Manila, Colegio de San Agustin Manila, University of Sto. Tomas and Ateneo de Manila University.
